The other evening, my girlfriend went out to get stuff from the grocery store few blocks away. En route back home, an older man approached her asking if she would kiss him and was willing to give money to get some. Now beyond the anger to the dehumanising or objectifying proposal was pure shock and surprise! She laughed it off, declined and quickly ran home. This was an experience for her mainly because of her impression of men like him. Stereotypically, he represents the religious, conservative and devote family man so such an advance was totally unexpected; she didn’t think such men acted like that. We joked about it later with my housemates and I learnt of similar stories in the neighbourhood to which we wondered if it was the same man. Looking deeper, it’s clear that nothing is what it seems and this is the mystery because life is more than what we see and touch each day. Beyond the appearances and masks is the true person who tends to surface in random moments, thus the drama we encounter each day. This is simply human nature and awareness of this truth is necessary as it helps when relating with the rest of the world.
I would love to hear any feedback, suggestions or stories about your own journey…
