I’ve recently been spending a lot of time with my god daughters and their parents; it’s been a most interesting experience because of what I’ve noticed. One major thing is the generational flow; how the son is just like the father or in this case, the daughter is just like her mother. I observe how this is so with actions, perspectives and attitudes. So my girls like the same restaurants, dress in a similar fashion and speak the same way as their mothers, for example. It makes sense as they spend much of their time together and of course, blood is thicker than water. I also notice how their mother’s fears and insecurities become theirs too. So my girls basically don’t like certain television shows, might be overly single-minded and are comfortable in their comfort zone, for example. It’s all unconscious but it makes sense how generally speaking, adults eventually become who they are and the world what it is. In different ways we’ve all been influenced by our parents or careers and this influences who we are today. This is something I’ve been reflecting on lately. I have no explicit solution to ensure our fears and insecurities don’t get passed down and there probably isn’t one but thought I’d share it with you because we’re all together in this.
