The Power of Words…

I was hanging with one of my god-daughters and her friends the other day.  Somewhere in the course of their playful and joyful engagement, they got into a little disagreement over something and one of them dismissively called her a cow.  It was like a movie because everything immediately went quiet and we all stopped to see how she would respond to this.  My god-daughter’s smile turned into a frown and her excitement dampened; she turned and screamed back that was a cow!  The other girl said she was, she said she wasn’t and they continued going back and forth on that note.  It evidently made her really upset and she rejected the idea that she was a four legged mammal, a source of milk and a resident on farms. This made her react accordingly.  I think about it and see how we usually teach our kids English from a literal perspective and it’s only with time that they learn about context, voice tone and body language.  Yet some actually don’t and I believe this is one reason for a lot of miscommunication in our relationships as adults.  This was a funny and interesting experience for me, I just had to share with you.

I would love to hear any feedback, suggestions or stories about your own journey…
