I recall many years ago when my goddaughter, who is now 7 was almost 3 years old. She really loved coming into my room to play with me. She’d jump on my bed, wear my hat and touch everything she could lay her hands on! She was always smiles and these moments were enjoyable for us both. One evening, however, she pushed the door open and crawled into my room. I was busy working on something and hadn’t noticed her till a few minutes after she had grabbed my phone. I was ecstatic! What if she had deleted contacts, seen pictures or just messed up my settings? I reacted accordingly with a bit of frustration and unpleasant surprise in my voice. She quickly dropped the phone and slowly walked out the door. She sat at the top of the stairs with her head bowed and a long face. Few minutes passed before I realized what I had to do. I went over, hugged her and apologized for my abrupt behavior. Like night turns to day, she quickly brightened up with a big smile and hugged me back. We went back to my room to play like we always did. That was the beginning of a greater lesson for me; it’s not all about what you say, it’s also how you say it.
I would love to hear any feedback, suggestions or stories about your own journey…
